What Are Flat Feet?

Flat feet is a foot disorder where a person’s feet have no or minimal arches.  The feet appear flat, and when standing, the soles of the feet touch the floor. It takes time for a child’s feet to develop arches, but it is possible they will not develop.  Flat feet can also occur at an older age.  This is most often a painless condition but if there is pain, it is most often felt in the feet because ligaments and muscles can be strained and underdeveloped. Back, knee, and ankle issues can become a problem from flat feet as well because they change leg alignment. If there is no pain, there is no need for treatment but if there is pain, typical treatment consists of special exercises and devices, like orthotics, that will help the foot function better. If you suspect you have flat feet and are experiencing pain, consultation with a podiatrist is suggested for proper diagnosis and suggestions for treatment.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Parkwood Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

If you are suffering from tenderness, pain, or stiffness in the joints of your feet or ankles, call us to schedule an appointment.

It’s not about the looks or the status, it’s about the fit. When in doubt, experts recommend that when shopping for running shoes to put fit over fashion, brand, or price.  Shoes that are too tight can cause blisters, while shoes that are too wide can hurt your toes. Shoes that fit poorly can cause tendonitis, pinched nerves, heel pain, ankle sprains, and stress fractures. Signs that your shoes don’t fit properly include heel slippage, numbness on the top of the feet, and bruising on the toes. The best way to prevent these from occurring is to measure your feet while also wearing the socks you will use as you run. Check your foot measurements periodically, as foot size can change if you gain or lose weight. A rule of thumb is to have at least a half-inch of room between your toes and the end of the shoe. Running shoes usually run about half a size larger than street shoes, to allow for the feet to expand as you run. Try on several types of shoes before making a decision. If you need guidance on the best running shoe for you, please consult a podiatrist.

If you are a runner, wearing the right running shoe is essential. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists from Parkwood Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

  • Neutral runners are able to choose from a wide variety of shoes, including minimalist shoes or even going barefoot.
  • Runners who overpronate, or experience an over-abundance of ankle rolling, should choose shoes that provide extra motion control and stability.
  • Runners who underpronate, or supinate, have feet that have high arches and lack flexibility, preventing shock absorption. They require shoes with more flexibility and cushion.

Children Can Experience Heel Pain Too

It may be difficult for you to know if your child is having heel pain, because it isn’t often associated with children. However, certain conditions that cause heel pain can afflict the young, even if they don’t know how to properly communicate their distress. Sever’s disease, for instance, is a form of heel pain that stems from irritation to the growth plate in the heels of growing children. Children can also develop plantar fasciitis from overuse of the heel or by wearing shoes that don’t fit. This condition is a painful inflammation of the plantar fascia tissue where it connects to the heel on the sole of the feet. Active children can also develop tiny stress fractures of the heel bone which can occur gradually over time and be quite painful. There are certain clues your child’s condition may provide, if you know what to look for. If your child limps or changes the way they walk or run, cuts back on physical activities, complains that their feet or heels feel odd or stiff, or that something is stuck in their shoe, they may have a painful heel condition. It is suggested to make an appointment for your child with a podiatrist to have your child’s condition diagnosed and treated properly.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact one of our podiatrists of Parkwood Podiatry. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

What Is Gout?

Gout, a type of arthritis, usually develops from too much uric acid in the blood. When there is a build-up of uric acid, uric acid crystals can form and deposit in joints, which will cause considerable pain, inflammation, and swelling. Gout is often seen in the big toe. This may happen because of the kidney’s inability to clear uric acid, an overproduction of purines, or both. Those who are insulin resistant, obese, or consume alcohol - particularly beer - are more apt to suffer from this condition than others. Dietary changes aimed at gradual, safe weight loss and avoiding food and drink containing high levels of purines or sugar are recommended to reduce levels of uric acid in the blood. Similarly, being well hydrated helps reduce the risk of crystal formation. If you feel pain in your big toe a podiatrist can provide proper diagnosis and treatment.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Parkwood Podiatry. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Falling is common among people who are sixty-five years and older. This can happen as a result of poor vision and balance, in addition to safety hazards that may be present in the household. It is beneficial for seniors to undergo routine physical examinations, and this can be helpful in updating existing medication. Additionally, balance and strength may be increased when a gentle exercise routine is frequently practiced. It is beneficial to implement falls prevention techniques which can consist of installing handrails in the bath and toilet area and removing any worn rugs. It is important for lighting to be improved, and existing clutter removed. The feet can be affected when falling occurs and can cause lifestyle changes. If you would like more information about how falling can affect the feet, please consult with a podiatrist.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with one of our podiatrists from Parkwood Podiatry. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.
